5 Random Coffee Facts That Will Surprise You

26 Sep 2016

COFFEE BREAK? WHILE YOU ENJOY A HOT, STRONG CUP OF GOOD LOVIN', HERE'S 5 FACTS ABOUT COFFEE YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW.

1. THE MOST EXTRAVAGANT TYPE COMES FROM POO

The most expensive (and rarest) coffee in the world, Black Ivory Coffee, is actually made from poo. This coffee embodies superior Arabica coffee cherries and of course, its process includes hand-picking then refining the beans from the faeces of elephants.

2. IT'S ALMOST THE BIGGEST COMMODITY

Second to oil, coffee is single-handedly one of the largest traded commodities in the world. Though there are countless coffee brands, there are only two types of coffee beans: Arabica and Robusta. With over 50 countries invested in coffee production worldwide, coffee remains one of the most valuable commodities on earth.

3. IT IMPROVES YOUR MEMORY

If you're a regular coffee-drinker, then you should remember (see what we did there) that coffee can surely reduce the risk of Alzheimers disease. In addition to improving your memory, coffee provides brain power, which is why most would swear by it to wake up, push through study, use as an afternoon kick or before a workout. It's actually awesome.

4. COFFEE FIRST MEANT "WINE"

If you start your day with coffee and end it with wine too, then this fact is pretty cool. In the beginning, coffee was called 'qahwah', which was derived from the Yemen translation for wine. The English word 'coffee' was only established when the Dutch called it 'koffie' after the Turkish said 'kahveh'. Names aside, we love them all the same.

5. NEW YORK DEPENDS ON IT

It's universally known that New York, otherwise labelled 'The City That Never Sleeps', is one of the fastest-paced cities worldwide. Since coffee motivates productivity, it makes perfect sense why most rely upon it to help manage a busy lifestyle. According to Business Insider Australia, 'New Yorkers drink seven times more coffee than everyone else'.

At Pran Central's Sugar Bowl Café, open 7 days a week, the incredibly-tasting coffee is truly no secret. And since they use organic fair trade coffee bean, it proves a conscious cup too! Choose from their mouth-watering range of desserts, and enjoy a delectable treat with your coffee.

Happy Sipping!
